Born in Tokyo, Ban studies at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and Cooper Union in New York with John Hejduk and then trains in Arata Isozaki’s studio.

After the 1995 Kobe earthquake, he creates prefabricated homes and a church with an unheard of construction system comprising simple cardboard tubes.
He then designs the Japanese pavilion for the Hannover Exposition (2000) and the Centre Pompidou – Metz (2010).
